2010 Census Outreach Project
“All
around us we hear rhetoric defending the status quo, defending the
advantages and privileges already secured by those who are
ahead…However, we are called to follow Jesus and to bring the light
of the gospel to bear upon this issue of diversity, liberation, and
inclusiveness.”
(Rev. Samuel DeWitt Proctor)
The
Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference (SPDC) is a part of the national
effort to encourage participation in the Census 2010 count. If
realized, the projected major undercounts in African American
communities will have dire effects. The Census is used by the
federal government over the next ten years to annually distribute
$400 billion to communities for schools, hospitals, and educational
programs such as job training. Businesses use census data to
determine where to open new shops, grocery stores, and restaurants.
Faith leaders rely on census data to design ministries and provide
aid and services for their communities. And, census data is
used to determine the number of congressional representatives that
each district elects.
Please consider the
following SDPC ministry resources to help with Census 2010.
(We are asking
that the Census Litany be printed in your church bulletin and/or
read by your congregation).
We will be sharing
information on a regular basis and hope you find our resources
helpful. We would love to hear from you so give us your
feedback on your progress in implementing Census 2010 projects or
activities.
Thank you for
advocating and acting for the common good of our communities.
